Involvements
Sorts of things that I've been up to.
The Grenadian Ministry of Education
- June 2007 - August 2007
- I spent a summer in the country of Grenada, working as an instructor for teachers and secondary-school students. Four other interns and I covered the topics of computer programming with Java, networking and security practices, and other various IT-related subjects. We also worked with the local Government to maintain and develop new infrastructure throughout the country.
Teaching Intern for IST 331
- January 2008 - Present
- I was asked to be a teaching intern for a class that I had taken in the spring of 2007. IST 331, a course oriented around usability and user-oriented design, was one of my favorite courses, and one that I excelled at as project manager for both the designing team and development team during our class-wide project to create a redesign our college's website.
IST FutureForum Committee
- January 2006 - Present
- The IST FutureForum is arguably one of the most important events that our college holds each year. It is an event in which faculty, staff, and students are brought together with the leaders of the IT industry to explore future trends and emerging issues. I was fortunate enough to earn a position on the planning committee, whom I helped by providing input about the event during meetings, contacting corporate relations, soliciting local businesses for prizes, preparing the event site, and acting as a university representative for corporations during the event.
IST Professional Expo Committee
- April 2006 - Present
- My efforts for the FutureForum led me to a position for the IST Professional Expo, another high-profile event hosted by IST. The event is essentially a professional career fair and networking event for IST students at Penn State. Currently, planning for the event is slated to begin during the end of this summer.
Computer-Supported Collaboration and Learning (CSCL) Laboratory
- February 2006 - Present
- I was hired by the CSCL Lab in the 2006 Spring semester. CSCL is a lab focusing on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and the improvement and development of software used in collaborative environments. My tasks in the lab involve design, development, and is moving more and more towards research-oriented work.
VISTA (Volunteers in IST Association)
- September 2005 - Present
- I've always enjoyed volunteer work, so I immediately joined VISTA once at Penn State. It's a group of students who volunteer with events surrounding IST. I've run blood drives, given tours of our building, spoken with prospective students, and helped with running several infosessions held for IST.
SOMA (Students Organized for the Multiple Arts)
- November 2005 - Present
- SOMA is a group of Penn State students who arrange art and music shows on campus during the academic year. As an active member of this club, I provide input for planning these events, and provide support for the club in any way that I am asked.
NukemLAN
- October 2002 - February 2005
- NukemLAN was a non-profit organization that was first managed by a small group of individuals including myself. As time progressed, some staff members would leave for college or lose interest, and the size of our staff eventually shrunk to only two. Our organization threw periodic LAN Parties (events in which you bring your own computer to a centralized location and link into a private network to play video games) whose attendance would be between 30 and 70 people per event. My responsibilities varied, but I usually handled arranging venues, obtaining corporate sponsorships, managing the party's website, and ensuring events ran smoothly. Overall, NukemLAN was a very successful non-profit until it's disbursement in February 2005 due to my moving to State College.
Seneca Valley Senior High School
- June 2003 - June 2005
- For over two years I volunteered all of my available daylight free time to assisting my high-school's technology facilitator. During that time I gained invaluable experience while troubleshooting hardware, software, and the complex network that worked its way through our building and campus.
Seneca Valley Ultimate Frisbee Club
- November 2004 - June 2005
- During my final year of high-school, I created and captained an Ultimate Frisbee team to compete in the PHUL League with other schools in the western Pennsylvania area. After its creation, my duties included the oversight of all facets of the club's operation, including the handling of forms, coordinating schedules and communicating with other teams.
